2021 Youth Week in Gilgandra
This year’s Youth Week began on April 7, and the Gilgandra Youth Services ensured that there was plenty to engage in.
On Thursday morning the Royal Flying Doctors teamed up with Dubbo Action Sports to provide the local children with a pop-up archery attraction.
With over 23 children in attendance from all around Gilgandra, the morning was filled with active kids, as well as a sprinkle of youth support service awareness from the team at NSW Health’s rural and drought support and Mission Australia.
Ursula Ryan, the community engagement officer for the Royal Flying Doctors, was incredibly pleased and grateful for Dubbo Action Sport’s donation.
“We find if we are going into a rural remote community, and there’s young kids going to be there, it’s an excellent engagement tool,” said Ms Ryan.
By holding these events, the youth services team hopes to build a connection with the children. By showing them that these safe places are available in the community, children are then able to reach out for the support when needed.
NSW Health’s Matt March from the rural and drought support team, was incredibly pleased with the turn out and engagement from the children.
“It’s about building that repour and having a presence and getting the community to understand that there are services that outreach to their community. And even if just one person engages later, it’s worth it, it’s more than worth it,” said Mr March.
