In the context of the semi-final aspirations of the Ahrens Gilgandra Panthers first grade side, it doesn’t get much bigger than this Saturday’s game against the Narromine Jets at McGrane Oval.

Currently, the door to the top five sits slightly ajar for the Panthers, but a loss to the Jets will certainly close that gap to a point where a mathematical miracle might be necessary for Gilgandra to figure in the semi-final series in the 2024 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League competition.

In their last two matches, against the unbeaten Coolah ‘Roos and the second placed Cobar Roosters, the Panthers have fully extended the opposition, but have come away without the major competition points.

This Saturday (July 8), they line up against the Narromine Jets, who are comfortably sitting in third position on the ladder, so another tough game is expected.

In their only meeting this year, played at Narromine in round two, Gilgandra led 18-12 midway through the second half, only to go on to lose 32-22.

Sitting on 18 competition points, three behind fifth-placed Coonabarabran, a win to Gilgandra would see them still in the race for a top five finish, but of course the results of other games will also conspire over the next few weeks to see what the semi-final makeup will be.

To have any chance it all comes down to the Panthers winning, and the results of other games going their way, and it all starts this Saturday afternoon.

Another big crowd is expected to watch the action. While the first graders had a bye last weekend, the Reggies and the Pink Panthers travelled to Dunedoo last Friday night to take on the Swans and the Swannettes with both suffering losses, the scores being 24-14 and 50-nil respectively.

Both those sides will be in action against the Jets this Saturday in a day that will feature four games, the first being a youth league game between Narromine and Binnaway.
