Substantial rain the previous night was welcomed by farmers, but the wet conditions unfortunately prevented several people from attending. However, 80 guests gathered at the hall in an atmosphere of friendship, pleasure and anticipation.

They were welcomed warmly and ably by MC Stuart Border, and treated to a sumptuous meal by Megan O’Connor Catering and the Curban Hall Committee.

While a bevy of waitresses brought out platters of food, one unknown waitress in particular sparked interest, and those who asked were told that she was Megan’s cousin.

In between courses, MC Stuart was interrupted by ‘Mario’, who introduced himself as a chef from ‘Lasagna’ in Italy, also apparently helping Megan.

What followed was brilliant entertainment by the two interlopers. Mario and the waitress - real names Blake and Rebecca – treated the audience to fabulous vocal solos and duets, incorporating excerpts from opera such as “Carmen”, which included an hilarious interlude when four volunteer audience members were coaxed on stage with a tambourine each, endeavouring to follow Rebecca’s lightning moves.

The duo sang beautiful modern classics like “You Raise Me Up”, to the comical “Shaddup Your Face”, involving the audience who sang raucously along.

Following their performances, Blake and Rebecca who are experienced professional entertainers from Sydney, chatted with members of their appreciative audience.

The event was sponsored locally by Gilgandra Shire Council, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Inland Petroleum, and Carlos Supa IGA. Without their support, staging this special event, as well as a forthcoming donation to the St Ambrose Memorial Church Restoration Fund, would not have been possible.

The committee was delighted that as guests left the hall that night, they were smiling.

A wonderful raffle of two tickets to a show of choice at Dubbo Regional Theatre, plus overnight motel accommodation plus an evening meal, was well supported.
