Judges’ comments: “If news is the head, then sport is the heart and soul of country newspapers. It was a pleasure to judge this section and they were all worthy of acknowledgement for very different reasons. Emily Middleton’s ‘Equity in Sport’ stood out as a great example of bringing that local lens onto a topic of national interest in profiling the struggles of the women’s rugby teams in and around the Gilgandra community. This insightful, well-researched story represented a budding issue in the community and presented it as part of a broader social discussion. I commend Emily on the evidence-led newswriting of this piece.”
