Gilgandra’s vibrant sports scene is set to be expanded with a new Ultimate Frisbee League starting.

The new frisbee league is set to begin today, April 1, 2025 with an eight-team franchise format loosely based on cricket’s Big Bash League.

Unofficial sources indicate team names may include the Gilgandra Services Club Scorchers, Gilgandra Toyota Thunder, the MH Thomas and Gilgandra Real Estate Heat, Gilgandra Golf Club Sixers (because that’s what most people score on par threes), Gilgandra CWA Hurricanes, and Gilgandra Shire Council Strikers.

Local schools are set to join forces to enter two combined sides, the Renegades and Stars.

School-based players will be allocated to either franchise based on their grades, with those excelling in the classroom lining up for the Stars.

With business houses already canvassed for support, the Gilgandra Ultimate Frisbee League organising committee of four will now look for a pristine facility in town to showcase the new competition. Hunter Park has seen a frisbee or two in its time and could be a good option.

Competition convener Flying Frisbee said that while this league wants the best athletes in Gilgandra and surrounds, they are open to all potential players.

“We’re looking for the best athletes Gilgandra has,” the convener said.

“That said, we’ll take anyone willing and able to play.

“Particularly if they can help on the committee as we don’t have many willing volunteers.

“If they can pass a frisbee and also catch one, they’ll be stars at this sport in no time.”

Eventually, the Gilgandra Ultimate Frisbee League plans to challenge other sports in town like cricket, golf, netball, rugby league, lawn bowls, and rugby union as the premier pastime in the Gilgandra shire.

Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact team sport played with a disc flung by hand.

With its well-known focus on self-officiating, those willing to play Ultimate Frisbee must be additionally bound by a moral code as well as the sport’s laws, with victories to be determined on ethics rather than actual results.

This might be a challenge for Australian-based sportspeople who like to play within the actual laws of any sport and let officials make decisions, which when written down on paper seems a pragmatic and sensible way to approach any sport.

However, those from England who feast on gaining “moral victories” in important cricket matches as opposed to actual success should revel in this new competition if they decide to jump on a plane and move to Gilgandra - even if they can’t catch or throw a frisbee.

Anyone that is interested in participating in the Gilgandra Ultimate Frisbee League is urged to contact the ‘I’m sorry you have been fooled’ hotline on 1800 FOOLED as we regret to advise that this article is an April’s Fools’ Day joke.
