In Mark chapter six, we see John the Baptist, chained in prison for speaking the truth; beheaded because of jealousy or hatred. The same John who leapt for joy in his mother’s womb at the presence of Jesus. The precursor of the saviour, joined to Christ in his life, and now in his death.

I doubt if any of us will have to give our life in the way John did. We are called, though, to give our life in love and service. We will ‘not be without any of the gifts of the Spirit’ (1 Cor 1) as we seek to enter into this relationship with the Son of God. It is all God’s work. He joins me to Christ. It’s His grace that calls me. It’s His grace that enables me to respond. It’s His grace that sustains me in the struggles and joys.

Lord Jesus, help me to come closer, to immerse myself in your love, so that I might truly be joined to you. Fill me with the desire to be one with you, and the courage to walk the path of loving service. Amen.
