Val Lummis awarded life membership at PROBUS Club of Gilgandra

President Pat Thompson welcomed members to the June meeting and had a couple of surprises for the morning. President Pat invited life member Shirley Mudford to make a special presentation. Shirley announced that Val Lummis had been granted life membership and presented her with a bouquet of flowers. Val has been a member for many, many years and has served as an Internal Director for most of that time, keeping attendance numbers at each meeting. Val responded by saying that she has enjoyed her time with PROBUS and thanked the Club for this honour.

The second surprise was that our guest speaker co-ordinator, Marg Zell, was to be guest speaker, at short notice. Marg commenced her talk by noting that after living 55 years in Gilgandra and, feeling right at home here, she hoped she could be regarded as a local! Marg was born to a father who was a lecturer at Sydney Teachers College and a mother who was also a teacher and she was shortly joined by a brother and sister. Marg’s father was prominent in education all his life and attained many high positions. Her mother was a great support to him and the family while also pursuing her own career, especially in special education.

Travel has now become a passion of Marg and Max, whether it be in Australia or overseas. Overseas trips have included many different countries, including South America, South Africa, Orkney Islands, Spain, Portugal, France, and Belgium. They enjoy learning about the successes in other countries and also share information with their fellow travellers. Often the highlight of a trip turns out to be something completely unexpected, like the large elephant which came right up to the vehicle and stared her in the eye, while she took its photo or in Vietnam, a couple riding bicycles, who appeared to have all their worldly possessions piled up between them as they rode, possibly to a different site to set up their stall.

On behalf of members Beryl Barden thanked Marg for her wonderful talk and sharing details of so many life experiences.
