Dear Editor,

Through your column, I wish to congratulate everyone connected to Gilgandra’s amazing Coo-ee Heritage and Visitors Information Centre. It is a pleasure to stop for coffee, to relax in the beautiful well-kept grounds, and visit the spotless toilets. Staff in the centre are wonderful, as are the ladies in the coffee shop. Well done to all, it’s a real picture!

From Shirley Marks, Gilgandra

Dear Editor,

With so much doom and gloom in most areas of the media these days it was so heartening to read The Gilgandra Weekly last week [May 28 edition] about so many positive events in our small community.

Firstly, the second successful film festival and especially the participation by school students within the shire – well done to these young people.

Then the wonderful donation to Gilgandra Public School of the ‘Sunshine Coach’ by the Variety Children’s Charity to ensure all children, including those in country areas, have the same opportunities.

It was interesting to learn of the expansion of Three Rivers Machinery and how they have progressed through the years and even though now in four locations, still provide personal assistance to their customers, by understanding different needs required throughout the areas they service.

Then release of residential land in Aeropark Estate, in close proximity to town, with Gilgandra Shire Council even providing an incentive to families who purchase the first five blocks and complete the building and occupy their dwellings within a reasonable period of time. Another positive from council – great news for those in rural areas with roads, creek crossings listed for attention and a range of works to provide improved access to the local road network.

Following was the comprehensive report on the annual Combined Christian Churches Unity Week, with many taking the opportunity to visit and worship at the various churches in Gilgandra. It is wonderful that the various congregations can come together in this way all believing in our great God who is always there to comfort us when we call on Him.

The school and library reports, as always, kept the reader up to date with the many experiences undertaken. It is amazing how opportunities are taken to participate in activities both sporting and academically by the students, at home and away.

Then the swimming club presentation featuring the outstanding efforts of members of this organisation.

Followed by sports reports on the many and various sporting events by diligent reporters and also Short ‘n’ Curly with his ‘insightful commentaries’ on all things sporting and his special poetry.

Last but not least, Semmler’s Sand and Gravel advertisement was excellent, listing all that this business has to offer to its customers.

As, I’m not a Facebook fan and, as a ‘researcher’ of history, I appreciate the printed word and printed advertising from newspapers in days gone by is fascinating and informative, together with stories regarding families and events. Where will people get this valuable info in the future? I had to buy a printed copy of ‘the weekly’ as the online version didn’t seem to do justice to all the above, it’s amazing how often this happens!

We are very fortunate to live in this great country and particularly in Gilgandra in these times. Well done, Lucie Peart and the team.
