On Saturday, March 15, in stifling 38 degree heat at 2.30pm at the Gulargambone Rugby Friendship Day, five ladies from the infamous Flamin’ Galahs Tri Tag rugby team represented the club in a Western Plains Women’s contact rugby team, which was put together by 20 women from all the Western Plains teams.

The five ladies representing the Flamin’ Galahs were Caitlynn Mills, Makaila Gordon, Peta Bradley, Alana Clark, and Rani Diggs.

The Western Plains women’s team was taking on the far more fancied rivals, the well-established Dubbo Kangaroos women's team, which plays in the Blowes Cup competition.

The Western Plains women's team had their first training run in preparation for this game, one hour earlier, mind you. The game was reduced to quarters and 12-a-side to allow for more reserves to continually come on and off the field in the oppressive hot conditions.

The girls put it to their more fancied rivals, and at the conclusion of the game, the Dubbo Roos ladies just ran out winners, six-tries-to-five.

Rani Diggs scored a smart individual try from the base of the ruck from about fifteen metres out.

Forwards CK, Mak, Peta and Alana were invaluable around the ruck area, tackling and taking the ball up.

The Flamin’ Galahs gruelling pre-season training paid dividends and the ladies kept in check with the opposition for the entirety of the match.

The Western Plains women’s dominated the second half over the Dubbo Roos women’s outfit.

At the conclusion of the match, the five Flamin’ Galahs ladies made a beeline straight for the Gulargambone Swimming Pool for a much needed and well deserved cool down.

The Western Plains Women’s contact rugby team is hoping to put a team together again for the Warren Rugby Gala Day set down for the April 5.
